Making the Grade: Improving the Financial Capability of Americans

Date: April 01, 2011

In honor of Financial Literacy Month, this event focused on new approaches to building the financial capability of Americans. The event also highlighted new strategies that combine the delivery of personalized, timely, financial information and advice with high quality financial products and services. The two-hour gathering also featured nonprofit innovators who showcased their approaches to empowering and enabling families to pay debt, build savings, and better manage their finances.

CFSI is a national nonprofit organization, committed to expanding access to high quality financial products and services for lower income, underbanked consumers. CFSI established the Financial Capability Innovation Fund in 2010 and this month is awarding $1.5 million in grants to five leading nonprofit organizations. These organizations are testing cutting-edge ideas that leverage technology, apply behavioral economics concepts, and closely combine personalized financial messaging with access to good financial products and services. NEFE, a nationally recognized nonprofit foundation, is dedicated to helping Americans acquire the knowledge and skills needed to take control of their financial destiny. NEFE has been a critical partner to CFSI in the launch of the Financial Capability Innovation Fund.

As consumers emerge from the financial crisis, it is critical that they are equipped with the necessary financial tools, information, and products to navigate the complexities of today’s financial services marketplace. The event will gather together policymakers, financial education experts, academics and nonprofits to explore new approaches to financial education and new policies to enhance Americans’ financial health and long term financial prosperity.
